Three new exhibitions are opening simultaneously on October 19, 2017 with a members’ preview reception to meet the artists from 5 – 6 PM and public reception from 6PM to 9PM. These exhibitions have been in the planning stage for well over a year and represent an especially significant range of work.

Holding the Line, ceramic sculptor Stanley Rosen’s (MFA Alfred ‘56) retrospective is revelatory. Rosen has long been a quiet visionary. His little known work from the late 1950’s, 1960’s and 70’s will astonish. This exhibition provokes a serious reassessment of twentieth century ceramic art confirming Stanley Rosen as one of the major ceramic artist of our time.

Prior to the opening of the Rosen exhibition, Mary Barringer, master potter, writer and recently retired editor of Studio Potter Magazine will give the Perkins Lecture Wednesday October 18 at 4:30PM in Nevins Theater at the Alfred University campus center. Her talk will feature an in depth review of Stanley Rosen’s art and studio practice.

Concurrent with the Rosen exhibition the Museum is celebrating the break out career of Kelsey Chase Folsom. His thoughtful, poetic and often challenging work will be on view in the exhibition hereafter. Folsom’s art establishes him at the forefront of a new generation of artists who have strong roots in ceramic art and are provoking fresh, dynamic possibilities of conceptual rigor facilitated by a passion for materials and making. The opening sentence of Kelsey Chase Folsom’s artist statement reads: My romantic life, at once tender and desperate, is the substance of my work. Many will be surprised by the brilliant body of work presented in this exhibition. Kelsey Chase Folsom is currently the Robert Chapman Turner Teaching Fellow at the New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University. Folsom will give a Gallery Talk on his exhibition November 3 at 5:00PM at the Museum.

To fulfill an interest in providing a range of work, the Museum will also feature this fall the exhibition Minyao (peoples’ pottery): The Art of the Everyday. Renowned American ceramic artists John Stephenson, Marie Woo and Susan Stephenson supported by a grant from the Asian Cultural Council-Rockefeller Foundation traveled frequently to mainland China on a mission to research and document the kilns and pottery of numerous remote villages. It is the Museum’s distinct privilege to exhibit the ceramic work they discovered. The collection of work on view is the result of their concerted effort to honor and preserve a powerful, disappearing ceramic language of the Chinese people.

Alfred University’s beautiful new Art Museum is especially designed to present work in an atmosphere of natural light. This is something in itself to be experienced. The Museum staff is looking forward to sharing the wonderful fall exhibitions with our community, regional and international friends.
