Some people call Alaska the trip of a lifetime.
Judy Shuler and Hildegard Ratliff simply called it home.
They didn’t yet know each other when each started a tour business in Juneau, inspired by the untamed beauty and the outdoor experiences that enriched their lives. They would meet at the waterfront cruise ship dock, their tour vans parked next to each other.
Thus began a collaboration that continued over several years while meeting tourists from around the world.
Red & Blue: A Memoir of Two Alaskan Tour Guides recounts their observations of the tourists who filled their vans. The book looks at reasons people travel and at our universal desire to feel connected to the natural world. It is also deeply rooted in a wild and beautiful place that continues to captivate visitors and residents alike.
Judy currently lives in Pomfret and is working on a book about friendship. Hildegard lives in Denver, CO.”
