In honor of the 30th anniversary of the release of the award-winning movie “Steel Magnolias”, the Palmer Opera House will be presenting the stage version of this play October 18 – 20, 2019.
Written by Robert Harling, the play was based on his experience with his sister’s death. The title suggests the “female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel”. The magnolia specifically references a magnolia tree they are arguing about at the beginning.
The stage version will require the talents of six actresses to play the strong Southern women at the heart of this production:
Truvy Jones – local beauty salon owner
Annelle Dupuy-Desoto, Truvy’s new assistant (with a “past”)
M’Lynn Eatenton – career woman, wife and mother to Shelby
Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie – new bride and (later) expectant mother
Clairee Belcher – former First Lady of Chinquapin
Ouiser Boudreaux – local “curmudgeon”, best friend to Clairee
