Nuyorican: Work by Jonann Quinones
During the height of Puerto Rican migration to the United States, mostly during the 1950s and 1960s, a new term came about to describe those of this diaspora – Nuyorican. Originally meant to be an insult, the term was reclaimed by a generation of artists, poets, and social activists living in New York as a way of addressing the intricacies of a new, hybrid identity. In this show, Assistant Professor of Sculpture, Joann QuiƱones, pairs poetry by Nuyorican poets with their own mixed media works, to highlight a queer, Afro-Latinx identity.
