Introduction to Block Printing with Audrey Kay Dowling

In this class students will get to explore beginning block printing. It will start with examples of block prints from many artists from the past, an explanation of the design process for block printing, and a drawing time using the glass cases of mounted birds in the Patterson Library’s collection as the subject for the prints. After each student develops a successful design to use, a discussion on how to transfer the design to the linoleum and how to use the cutter tools and using texture in their pieces. The students will cut the blocks and then learn how to use the printing inks. This class will be focusing on one-color prints individually designed by each student. Students will be encouraged to look for different papers to print on for variety. Students can also choose different ink colors to purchase on-line to add variety to their prints.

Materials:

I would suggest the Deluxe Speedball set from Amazon for $47.99- this one comes with two different types of blocks to use (which is good to learn about) and different colored inks, as well as black. The cutters are made by Speedball and are reliable and inexpensive student grade cutters. There are cheaper sets that include less materials and inks- your choice.

Papers of different types- can include a wide variety of papers who likely already own.

Drawing paper and a soft pencil and a pen (black ink preferred)
