The State University of New York at Fredonia’s annual Freedonia Marxonia festival presents the 1932 comedy Horse Feathers.
The film stars the four Marx Brothers – Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo. Groucho plays the scheming president of Huxley College, Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff, who plans to make the school’s football team a winner. Harpo and Chico are mistakenly recruited as professionals to play on the team for the big game against rival Darwin U. Zeppo is Frank Wagstaff, son of the college president.
Horse Feathers is the Marx Brothers’ fourth feature motion picture. The original review by The New York Times stated the movie “…aroused riotous laughter from those who packed the theatre for this first performance. Some of the fun is even more reprehensible than the doings of these clowns in previous films, but there is no denying that their antics and their patter is helped along by originality and ready wit.” It is listed as No. 65 on the American Film Institute’s list of the top 100 funniest movies in American cinema, “100 Years … 100 Laughs.”
