Fredonia Marxonia – Animal Crackers

The State University of New York at Fredonia’s annual Freedonia Marxonia festival presents the 1930 comedy Animal Crackers.

The film stars the Four Marx Brothers – Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo. Groucho plays Captain Jeffrey T. Spaulding, the African explorer. He returns to great fanfare, a painting is stolen, and Marx mayhem ensues. The movie includes “Hurray for Captain Spaulding,” and “Hello, I Must Be Going” – two of the songs most associated with Groucho Marx.

Animal Crackers is the Marx Brothers’ second feature film, and is based on their 1928 Broadway musical of the same name. The script was written by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind. Music and lyrics were written by Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby (who also composed “Hail Freedonia” for the Marx Brother’s 1933 Duck Soup).

Come see this classic comedy in the same venue as did local audiences 89 years ago! In October 1930, Animal Crackers was screened during its original release at the Wintergarden Theatre, which is now the 1891 Fredonia Opera House.

This screening will present the remastered version of Animal Crackers. Unrated, the film runs 99 minutes.

The evening will include prizes, too!

The Freedonia Marxonia festival, created by a student at the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1987, celebrates the Marx Brothers and their movie Duck Soup, set in the fictional country of “Freedonia.”
