Artist Gallery Talk: Janet McKenzie

Janet McKenzie will present a talk on her work and career on Monday, October 22nd at 4:00 p.m. in the Quick Center’s Theater Atrium, 1st Floor of the Museum.

Vermont artist Janet McKenzie pays homage to the feminine figure through sacred and secular imagery. Ms. McKenzie’s paintings depict an inner strength that often challenge and comfort the viewer. With her newest exhibition at the Quick Center, “Holiness and the Feminine Spirit,” McKenzie hopes to present a new and inclusive view of women and religion. She explores diversity, children, and symbolic imagery in her work and pays tribute to women as sacred individuals, leaders for positive change, and mothers.

“Women are for me sacred beings that are the foundation of life, subjects that have the power to captivate my imagination and inform my expression.”

Janet McKenzie’s work is collected and exhibited around the world. At the Millennium, her image of Jesus, “Jesus of the People”, was selected as the winner of the National Catholic Reporter’s “Jesus 2000” competition, by judge Sister Wendy Beckett and revealed to the public for the first time on the “Today Show.” Reproductions of her artwork are regularly carried in demonstrations and marches across the United States as visual testaments in support of racial equality and as a voice against prejudice, and in support of women’s rights and the LGBTQ+ community. McKenzie has received many awards throughout her career and most recently was the subject of “The Divine Journey: a Painter’s Mission,” a short documentary about the artist’s work and the creation of a commission for Memorial Church at Harvard University.
